About Truro

Truro is a cathedral city and the county town of Cornwall. Historically, Truro, which is built on rivers, used to be a port. Ships were able to reach The Quay up until the 1920s, when silting made it impossible.

Cornwall has a proud mining and engineering heritage and the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro holds internationally important collections detailing the county’s culture and history.

Although not the county’s most populated community – it’s a small city of around 20,000 people – Truro is Cornwall’s prime retail destination its administrative centre. Its best-known landmark and visitor attraction is the gothic-revival Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Economically, Truro benefits from Cornwall’s tourism industry. Jobs-wise, the main employers are in the public services sectors such as health, schools and higher education, including Cornwall Council, Truro City Council, Royal Cornwall Hospital and Truro College.

Food and drink are important to the local economy, with many cafés, restaurants and bars showcasing local produce. There’s a Farmer’s Market on Lemon Quay twice a week, and Skinner’s Brewery is based in Truro. The Truro Business Improvement District (BID) operates to raise the profile of the city and attract more visitors. Notable music and theatre venues include the Hall for Cornwall.
