About Sheffield

Sheffield is known as The Steel City because of its historical global reputation for high quality steel production and innovation – stainless steel was invented here, and research and new innovations continue today. In recent years, the South Yorkshire city has widened its economic base from largely industrial to a mixed economy. Investment, regeneration and redevelopment has seen the city’s economy revive after a period of decline and it has proved a popular location for businesses to locate to.

Sheffield is one of England’s largest regional cities (approx. 577,000 in the City of Sheffield; 1.6 million in the metropolitan population), yet boasts large expanses of green spaces, which make up 60% of the area – hence its other name, The Outdoor City. Major visitor attractions include Sheffield Cathedral, the Millennium Gallery, the Winter Garden and Sheffield Botanical Gardens.

Sheffield is a busy retail centre, with shopping centres at Fargate, Meadowhall, and The Moor Precinct. The Devonshire Quarter is home to independent shops and a variety of restaurants and bars.

The city has two universities, the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University, with tens of thousands of students between them. It also has two major football clubs, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. Sporting, musical and cultural associations include Sebastian Coe, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Gordon Banks, Joe Cocker, Def Leppard, Pulp, the Human League, Arctic Monkeys, Sean Bean and Michael Palin. And Sheffield is famous for hosting the World Snooker Championships at The Crucible.

The city is served by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which runs the city’s main hospitals, and the local authority is Sheffield City Council. South Yorkshire police also have their HQ in Sheffield.
