About Peterborough

Peterborough is an historic city in Cambridgeshire which in 2018 celebrated the 900th year of its construction. But Peterborough goes back way longer than that – there has been a settlement here for at least 3,500 years and marine reptile fossils dated at 150 million years old have been found in the area.

Situated 75 miles north of London and 70 miles east of Birmingham, and being on the East Coast Main Line from London to Edinburgh, Peterborough has good transport links. It was the arrival of the railways in the 19th century that saw the city develop from a market town into an industrial centre. It was the UK’s biggest producer of bricks for most of the 1900s, thanks to huge deposits of local clay.

Today, the city’s successful economy is built on financial services and distribution, while major companies Thomas Cook, Phoenix Life and British Sugar all have their headquarters in Peterborough.  The retail hub is at the Queensgate Shopping Centre, home to High Street brands and cafés and restaurants.

In education, University Centre Peterborough (UCP) has plans to become the new University of Peterborough. Peterborough Regional College, meanwhile, offers education and training to over 10,000 students and businesses every year, and the city also has a number of language schools. The area’s health service is provided North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust – the city’s main hospital, Peterborough City Hospital, is a modern facility that was opened in 2010. The local authority is Peterborough City Council, while the city’s football club, Peterborough United, go by the nickname of The Posh.

Peterborough’s best-known building and a major tourist attraction is the impressive Peterborough Cathedral – one of the finest Norman cathedrals in England.
