About Nottingham

Nottingham is enjoying a period of economic growth in terms of both GDP and employment. The city has an estimated population of 320,000 but add on the suburbs and it rises to over 900,000. It’s the largest urban area in the East Midlands.

Historically, the city and its environs played an important role in the industrial revolution. For many years, Nottingham was synonymous with coal mining, lace-making and manufacturing – it is the birthplace of Raleigh Cycles. The success of modern-day Nottingham lies in finance, commerce, leisure, digital media, life sciences and retail – expenditure in the shopping sector is among the highest in the UK according to the retail footprint rankings.

Several major companies have their headquarters in Nottingham, including Boots, Experian, E.ON UK, Siemens, Vision Express and Specsavers.

Tourism is important, with the city’s colourful history helping to boost visitor numbers – Sherwood Forest, Nottingham Castle and the legend of Robin Hood are big draws. The city is also popular with food lovers, with several hundred restaurants – well-known chef Sat Bains has a 2-star Michelin restaurant.

Adding to the city’s vibrancy are the 60,000 students who attend Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham. Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust manages the city’s hospitals, including City Hospital, Ropewalk House and Queen’s Medical Centre, which has Nottingham Children’s Hospital.

Culturally, Nottingham is famous for being the birthplace of the novelist, DH Lawrence. And it has a rich sporting heritage, with Trent Bridge hosting international cricket and Nottingham Forest Football Club winning the European Cup twice under the management Brian Clough. Directly opposite, on the other side of the River Trent, Notts County have the distinction of being the oldest professional football club in the world, having been formed in 1862.
