About the City of London

The City of London – known as The Square Mile – contains the historic centre and the financial district of London. It vies with New York City as the financial capital of the world. Many of the world’s major banks, insurance and finance institutions have their headquarters in the City, including Lloyds of London and the Bank of England. The London Stock Exchange is also here.

The City of London, located on the River Thames, has some of the capital’s most historic visitor attractions, notably The Tower of London, Tower Bridge, St Paul’s Cathedral and The Guildhall, London’s ancient town hall. The City also has the UK’s biggest fish market, Billingsgate, the Museum of London and the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales, aka The Old Bailey.

In recent years, skyscrapers have been built in the City, primarily for use as offices in the financial sector – the tallest at 225 metres is the Leadenhall Building, dubbed ‘The Cheesegrater’.

The area has a number of independent schools and part of three universities and has a host of public libraries and galleries. NHS-managed hospitals that cover the area include Guy’s, University College Hospital, Royal London Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital.

Major annual events which take place in the City are The Lord Mayor’s Show, and it’s an iconic section of the London Marathon.
