About Lincolnshire

Lincolnshire is one of the largest counties in England, with a coastline on the east coast. Major areas are the historic cathedral city of Lincoln, Stamford, Grantham, Scunthorpe, Boston, Horncastle, Spalding, Gainsborough, Market Rasen, Sleaford, the port of Grimsby and the seaside resorts of Skegness and Cleethorpes.

The county is largely agricultural, with arable, vegetables and sugar farming, and the Potato Council has a research centre in the county.  Grimsby, on the south bank of the River Humber estuary, has a strong fishing industry heritage. It has 500 food-related companies, making it one of the largest centres of food manufacturing, research, storage, and distribution in Europe. And it is one of the largest centres of fish processing in Europe. Young’s Seafood and Findus are among the major companies here.

In terms of financial contribution to the county, the finance and service sector is top, and industry and construction is second. Tourism is centred around the coastal resorts and the county town, Lincoln. Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln Castle are major attractions, and just two of the city’s many historic buildings and structures. It’s also home to the University of Lincoln and has the HQ for Lincolnshire County Council. The county’s hospitals are managed by the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

In sport, Lincolnshire’s main football teams are Scunthorpe United, Lincoln City, and Grimsby Town, and there is a racecourse at Market Rasen.
