About Leeds

Leeds is a booming city that has seen major growth in recent years. It has one of the most diverse and largest economies in the UK and the fastest rate of private-sector jobs growth of any UK city.  It is the cultural, financial and commercial heart of West Yorkshire and also has four universities, with the fourth largest student population in the UK.

Leeds – historically an important wool and mill town – is the largest legal and financial centre outside London, with the financial and insurance services industry worth an estimated £13 billion to the city’s economy.

The finance and business service sector account for almost 40% of total output, with more than 30 national and international banks located in the city, including an office of the Bank of England. The growth has led to an expansion in office developments in Leeds. Major companies based here include KPMG, the Capita Group, ASDA, William Hill, Aviva and the BT Group.

Leeds is also the UK’s third largest manufacturing centre, boasting some 1,800 firms with almost 40,000 employees.  The largest sectors are engineering, printing and publishing, food and drink, chemicals and medical technology. Other major sectors are retail, leisure, tourism and the visitor economy, construction, and the creative and digital industries. The shopping area in the city centre pays a massive part in the economy, with over 1,000 retail stores. Trinity Leeds is the newest shopping arcade, while the historic Victoria Quarter is notable for its impressive architecture and its luxury, high-end shops.

Local services are provided by Leeds City Council – the city’s biggest employer, and the local hospitals are run by the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
