About Derby

Derby is a city in the East Midlands with a population of around 250,000 people. It was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution, one of the country’s most important centres for manufacturing, engineering, mills and transport – notably railway engineering. The transport industry is a tradition that continues today, as Derby is now a hub for advanced transport manufacturing – Rolls Royce (aero engines and cars) and Toyota (cars) are two of the big names here and major employers. Another significant employer is Sky, which has a customer support contact centre.

The main retail hub is in Derby with 160 shops, attracting 25 million visitors a year.  Derby has several markets, too, including indoor, farmers and night markets. Derby Cathedral Quarter is the place to go for restaurants, cafés, bars and independent shops. It’s also the cultural, historical and architectural centre of the city. The Quad is an eye-catching arts centre with a gallery and cinemas.

As well as its own attractions, Derby is also a hotels base for visitors using the city to explore the nearby Peak District.

In education, the city has 15 secondary schools and the University of Derby. The local authority is Derby City Council, and the health service is provided by University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. The city’s two main hospitals are the Royal Derby Hospital and London Road Community Hospital.

The city’s biggest sports club is Derby County Football Club, nicknamed The Rams because of the ram that features on the city’s coat of arms.
