About Bristol

With a population of around 460,000, Bristol is the biggest city in the South West of England. Built near the confluence of the Rivers Avon and Frome, the city has a long maritime and trading history, once boasting a booming import and export industry.

Today, its excellent communication and transport network (M4, M5, main railway line stations, Bristol Airport and sea) has helped the economy to grow and flourish. It is now a sought-after place for businesses and professional people to locate to. In 2017, its gross domestic product was over £88 billion. Its per capita GDP of £46,000 is 65 % higher than the national average.

The economy is built on the financial services sector, creative media, technologies, electronics, and the aerospace industry.  Tourism is also important, and the historic city centre docks have been redeveloped as centres of heritage and culture. The wealth of quality restaurants and venues has contributed to the city’s successful night-time economy.

Bristol is a major learning city, with the University of Bristol, the University of the West of England and the University of Law. NHS healthcare is provided by the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, which offers over 100 clinical services across 9 sites.

In media and culture, Bristol is home to the BBC Natural History Unit based at Broadcasting House, which makes the acclaimed documentaries from Sir David Attenborough, including The Blue Planet. Aardman Animations – creators of Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run and Shaun the Sheep – are also based in Bristol. And graffiti artist Banksy is from Bristol. The city’s most iconic structure is Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s masterpiece, the Clifton Suspension Bridge over the Avon Gorge.
