About Brighton

Brighton in Sussex is one of the UK’s most popular seaside resorts, boasting a long beach and two iconic piers. It first became a fashionable tourism destination in the Georgian era, and King George IV was a regular visitor.

Tourism grew following the arrival of the railways in the 1800s, and the industry is behind many of town’s best-known structures and buildings, including Brighton Palace Pier, Royal Pavilion, the Grand Brighton Hotel and the remnants of West Pier.

Today, Brighton is a vibrant, diverse city with a resident population of approaching 300,000 people. Its newest attraction is the British Airways i360. Designed by the creators of the London Eye, it takes people slowly up to a height of 450ft, affording 360-degree views of the coast. Brighton is also a popular conference venue – it has a purpose-built conference centre, The Brighton Centre.

While tourism is the main industry, commerce, retail, technologies and digital media are also important. American Express has its European HQ in Brighton and employs thousands of people in its offices. The main shopping areas are Churchill Square, and The Lanes, a network of characterful narrow lanes near the seafront with independent shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs.

The University of Brighton has 20,000 students, while just outside the city centre, the University of Sussex is home to the Institute of Development Studies and the Science Policy Research Unit.  Among the main public service employers are Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and Brighton & Hove City Council.

Brighton is a busy cultural centre, with venues including the Theatre Royal and the Brighton Dome, and is also boasts a lively nightlife. Famous residents include superstar DJ, musician and record producer, Fatboy Slim. The city’s professional football club is Brighton & Hove Albion.
